The Early Years and Manufacturing Bílrúðan ehf is rooted in a proud tradition of Icelandic manufacturing, beginning its journey in 1972. Founded with the goal of producing high-quality windshields for the domestic market, the company quickly exceeded expectations. In its first few months alone, over a thousand windshields were sold, signaling a strong start for this new industry.
A Milestone in Icelandic Export In 1973, Bílrúðan reached a historic turning point by exporting its first shipment of windshields to Sweden. The buyer, Kubex Impex AB in Umeå, utilized the glass for Volvo and Saab vehicles. This marked a significant moment in Icelandic economic history, representing a brand-new export sector based on local production.
Advanced Technology and International Standards During these formative years, production was ambitious and utilized only the finest materials. Using “FLOAT” glass to ensure distortion-free clarity, windshields were shaped in custom-made molds, laminated with safety film, and pressed at 180°C to guarantee strength and safety. All windshields were produced under license from the Swedish factory Kubex and achieved the highest quality rating, AS1, meeting the strict international requirements of the US, Canada, Germany, and Sweden.
Growth and Evolution As the company expanded, it began importing glass from Saint-Gobain Sekurit, one of Europe’s most prestigious manufacturers of safety glass. This ensured that customers continued to receive top-tier products alongside specialized domestic processing. During this period, Bílrúðan also produced laminated safety glass for heavy machinery, coaches, and various custom projects, with an initial production capacity of 15,000 windshields per year.
Resilience and Today’s Operations In 1981, the company moved to Grettisgata 87, where it operated for decades, cementing its position as a market leader. Following a fire in 2016 that temporarily halted operations, Bílrúðan moved to its current modern facility at Smiðjuvegur 14 in Kópavogur.
